Becoming a Catholic

(“Rite of the Christian Initiation of Adults.”)

This name has recently changed to “ABC: About Being a Catholic.”

The ABC is the process by which adults who are not Catholic are welcomed into the Christian Family in the Catholic Church. Becoming a Catholic is not just a matter of learning and accepting a number of beliefs but rather a process of growth and conversion. It involves personal growth, as well as growing into a particular Catholic Community or Parish. For this reason each parish in the Catholic Church is responsible for it’s own ABC process and programme.


If you are interested in becoming a catholic, or know someone who is, and wants to become a member of the Catholic Community here at St. Mary’s please contact the Parish Secretary in the Priory for more information and advice.

Are you interested in the Catholic Faith?

The About Being Catholic course usually begins in St Mary’s Church in September at 7.30pm, - with Fr John explaining everything Catholic that you  can see in a Catholic Church: statues, kneelers, Holy Water, Crucifix, candles, Confessional…..plus the priest’s vestments. Just turn up, even bring someone with you.  The ABC program will then continue each Thursday through to Easter and Pentecost, with an explanation, or demonstration, of all Catholic beliefs and practices, - one each Thursday. Full programme available from parishpriest@saintmarysharborne.org.uk  PS: no pressure, but for those who decide to become Catholic, that can happen at the Easter Vigil Mass.
