St. Mary’s Church : The CAFOD Group

CAFOD stands for the Catholic Agency For Overseas Development. This is an international development charity and the official aid agency of the Catholic Church in England and Wales.

CAFOD works with people living in poverty – whatever their religion or culture. Through local church partners, like our parish group, CAFOD helps people directly in their own communities, and campaigns for global justice, so that everyone can reach their full potential.

St. Mary’s CAFOD Group has been in existence for many years and meets for one hour at 8pm on the second Monday of every month in the Priory. Any parishioner is welcome to attend the meetings as the group is keen for new people to join and contribute their ideas to support our work.
Our focus is to raise local awareness of world poverty, human rights and other linked issues of peace and justice. We do this by encouraging people to sign petitions, raise funds and participate in rallies and retreats. We also have fun!
This year for example we organised a pilgrimage from University Station along the canal to St. Chad’s cathedral reflecting on the plight of refugees arriving in Europe. This was inspired by the Lampedusa crosses produced from smashed migrant boats.

We raised £1,730.00 as a result of last year’s annual 5p Advent campaign and were able to buy 49 donkeys.
This year’s 5p Advent campaign will focus on raising money to buy Healthy Mother and Baby gifts. We will be launching our appeal on 26 November 2016. We are hoping to raise £1,800.00 to enable us to buy 60 packs.
In the past we have organised a Fairtrade wine tasting evening as well as a CAFOD quiz evening.

We also help to promote National Fairtrade Fortnight during March each year.

In the church porch there is a CAFOD information board. On it throughout the year we advertise fund raising events held in the parish and other activities in the city and elsewhere. Dates of meetings and the chair’s contact details are also displayed on the board.

For further information about the group please contact the chair Phil Simpson either by email or by phone on 0121 427 2945.

CAFOD has its own internet web site, so if you would like more information about its work worldwide or just to surf a very interesting site, then please go straight to the site.

The CAFOD TV channel on YouTube –is an amazing site for CAFOD video clips.
