The Augustinians (Austin Friars) arrived at St. Mary’s, Harborne, in 1973 to a growing Catholic population and realised along with the previous Passionists that the church was becoming too small. Ever since the World War years the possibility of enlarging the church, or even building a new one, was on everyones lips. The final decision was not made until 1976 when the Prior, Fr. Malachy Laughran and the Parish Council decided to give the go-ahead.

With an eye to future developments a “Development Fund” had been set up the previous year with Mr. R. E. Hamilton as its Treasurer and Co-ordinator of Parish Finances. Action was taken immediately, notably The Covenant Scheme (now Gift Aid), and this was to have far-reaching consequences in financial terms.

Fr. Malachy Laughran, Prior; Brian Rush, Architect; Carmel Cauchy, Sculptor; Russell Hamilton, Treasurer; all looking at the Building Plans.

The Architects impression of the new developments for St. Mary’s, comprising of an old and a new church and a Servite Community Housing project at the corner of Vivian Road and Harborne Park Road.

A firm of Architects, Brian A. Rush and Associates, was consulted, plans were drawn up, and finally in July 1977 a contract for the new church was signed with W. T. Pickering Ltd. The work on the new church started on 1st August 1977 and was finished in 56 weeks.

It can be truly said that the new church of St. Mary’s is a landmark, not only that it greatly improves that area of Harborne but it is a monument to the steadfastness and generosity of its people; it is a sign of affirmation that Christ IS alive, and it is the strength of HIS people.
